Rio Carnaval 2012 – Welcome to the Sambadome

The sambadome parade is a 2 day event where 13 of Rio’s  samba clubs compete for the worlds most glamorous fancy dress prize. This is a big thing in Brazil and they spend millions on it each year.  Teams get promoted and relegated based on their performances, style, flair etc and they take it really seriously – so much so that one of the Sao Paulo teams started a riot and burned all the floats when they got relegated this year!

We had tickets for the first night and so after a few warm up beers we entered the 1km long, 90,000 seater arena, not really knowing what to expect.  9 hours later we staggered out at dawn, completely gobsmacked and in awe of just how amazing this event is.  Everybody should try to go at least once in their lifetime.

These photos really don’t do it justice…
