Carnaval isn’t just about the sambadrome parade, it’s an excuse for the whole country to party! For the 5 days of Carnival, Rio becomes one big fancy dress party with pretty much everyone wearing costumes of some sort – devils, brides, superheroes, princesses etc (seeing Wonder woman do the walk of shame at 8 in the morning is a sight to behold)
Each of the neighbourhoods in Rio also throws their own street party, or Bloca as its known, and have a little parade, a little music and a lot of alcohol! There are usually several a day so it really does become a 24 hour city.
To finish Carnaval several gala balls are held. We were lucky enough to get tickets to the Gay Ball which was probably the most flamboyant. We spent the night in the company of Rio’s drag queen fraternity and had the best time – soooooo much fun!
