Melbourne to the Grampians

After a fab week on the west coast it was time to start our road trip from Melbourne to Cairns.  Having decided to keep cities to a min, we had a very quick scoot round Melbourne taking in the trams, the South Bank and the Lanes before we picked up our hire car and headed west towards the Grampians.

We were booked into the Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld for the night on route to the Great Ocean Road and having arrived early evening we walked some of the local trails and caught up with some of the local residents…

The Royal Mail Hotel is known for its famous chef Robin Wickens, and the breakfast was… well.. something else! I’ve not had a breakfast where an amuse bouche was served before a cooked breakfast of just pure delight served on a sour-dough toast… heaven!

Stuffed, we jumped in the car and drove down the stunning country roads to the centre of the Grampians and the town of Halls Gap.

The temps were in the mid 30s and there was a high wind so the tourist office advised against long hikes but we managed a short walk to Venus Baths

and then a drive to the view points at Boroka and Reed – both of which gave stunning views out over the landscape.

It’s a really stunning part of the countryside and not what I had in mind when I think of Australia, so a nice start to our trip east by going west!
